What Are Circuit Breakers and How Do They Work?

Circuit breakers are a vital part of any modern electrical system. They protect your wiring from damage and your home from electrical fires, which can be caused by issues such as:

  • Short circuits—Irregular connections between currents that can lead to dangerous conditions.
  • OvercurrentsElectrical currents that are too large, which can also lead to dangerous conditions.

When the circuit breaker detects irregularities, it cuts off the current. This prevents fires, as well as damage to your wiring and appliances.

Don’t Miss Out on These Savings!

What Are the Signs I Need My Circuit Breaker Replaced?

Circuit breakers can be expected to last between 30 to 40 years. While they have a relatively long life span, they eventually need to be replaced. Additionally, older models may not be able to handle modern electrical demands. That’s why it’s essential to schedule an electrical inspection whenever you move into a new home.

Think you might need a new circuit breaker? Besides age, here are a couple of indicators:

  • You notice scorching or a concerning smell. If your breaker shows signs of scorching or emits a burning smell, this is a sign of a serious problem. It likely means the wires (or insulation around them) are overheating or melting due to an overcurrent. This poses an electrical fire risk—shut off your home’s main power and immediately call an electrician for emergency service.
  • The breakers keep tripping. A breaker that trips continuously may be wearing out. This issue can become particularly irritating when you can only run your lights or appliances for short periods. Don’t wait—call VPC Electric for assistance today.

Fuse Box to Circuit Breaker Upgrades

Were you aware that electricians stopped installing fuse boxes in new homes built after 1960? Even if they have been modified, fuse boxes aren’t designed to meet today’s energy demands.

If your older home still has a fuse box, get it replaced. Our team of electricians can help you upgrade to a modern circuit breaker that meets your home energy needs.
